National League youngster linked with Middlesbrough and Sunderland set to stay put

Championship side Middlesbrough and League One promotion hopefuls Sunderland are two of many sides to have been interested in Hartlepool United star Josh Hawkes. However, he is now set to stay put, it has been reported.

According to the Hartlepool Mail, Hartlepool United are set to keep a hold of attacking midfielder Josh Hawkes, despite interest from a host of football league clubs, including Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

It has been reported over the course of the last year that Hartlepool’s Josh Hawkes has been catching the eyes of football league sides. Middlesbrough and Sunderland have been joined by Championship pair Hull City and Sheffield United in the chase for Hawkes, while Premier League trio Newcastle United, Burnley and Huddersfield were all also interested.

League One side Barnsley were reportedly keen somewhere along the line as well, But, despite heavy interest, the attacking midfielder is set to remain with Hartlepool.

The club are expected to trigger a clause in the 20-year-old’s contract, extending his current deal with the National League side until the end of the 2019/20 season.

So far this season, Hawkes has played 25 games in the National League, netting eight goals from midfield for Craig Hignett’s side. He has helped his side into 12th place in the table, as they look set for another campaign at the top of the non-league football pyramid.

Extending the attacking midfielder’s deal does not rule out the possibility of a move completely, however. The report adds that the club will not stand in the way of their young talents making the step up into the football league.
