Huws: Only the Start
Tuesday, 9th Jul 2019 11:26

Midfielder Emyr Huws was delighted to return to first-team action in Saturday’s opening pre-season friendly against Paderborn, a match which was the Wales international’s first game for the senior side since December 2017.

Huws was part of the XI which played the second half of the 3-2 defeat to the Bundesliga new boys, ‘winning’ their half 1-0.

Although by no means at his best Huws showed glimpses of the form which made his such a fans' favourite following his loan from Cardiff at the end of 2016/17 and at the start of the next season after his move had been made permanent.

The 25-year-old last appeared for the first team at Middlesbrough in December 2017 when he suffered a knee injury which required surgery.

The one-time Manchester City youngster made a couple of abortive comebacks last season, featuring for the U23s and on one occasion on the bench for the first team, but Saturday was his first action for the senior side since suffering the injury.

“My first proper game of football in a long time. It wasn’t my best and I was rusty,” he wrote on Instagram.

“But to look back at how far I’ve come in the last six months makes me proud. This is only the start. The smart work continues!”

Huws is likely to get another half under his belt when the Blues play at the Interwetten Cup in Meppen on Sunday, either in the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf or the Blues’ subsequent match, either the final or the third/fourth play-off, against hosts SV Meppen or Dutch club FC Utrecht. Both games will last 45 minutes.

Since Saturday's first friendly Town have continued their training camp at their remote Romantik Hotel Aselager Mühle base in Lower Saxony close to Meppen.

In addition to the hard work on the FIFA training field, the squad have been taking part in recreational activities, including Sunday’s paintballing sessions, while a lot of the squad went cycling yesterday afternoon. Jack Lankester also posted a video of a keenly-contested game of Monopoly on social media.

The facility, which regularly hosts top German clubs for training camps, also features a tennis court, a gym and a massage room.

The squad, which is 29-strong plus coaching and support staff taking the total to 50, will return to the UK on Monday following the Interwetten Cup.

If we can keep Huws fully fit and in form then he's basically a brand new signing and probably one of the best players in the league. Remains a big ‘if' whether that can happen though!

He is only 25? In a way that is good for us if he can stay injury free, should have many years ahead of him. Good player and it´s a shame we have seen so little of him.

Everything crossed he stays fit. In a reality where we have no money to spend, I ask everyone to stop being negative and temper expectations. Look at it another way, if Downes, Dozzell, Bishop, Woolfenden, Lankester all realise their potential, we've got players each worth millions. Add to that Judge, Nolan, Norwood, Edwards, Huws, Bart (for now), Skuse (league 1 will benefit him). We've got serious talent there, and some excellent coaches to develop them. Then there is Ndaba, Dobra, El Mizuni, Clements, Zak Brown, Kai Brown, McGavin, Morris all waiting in the wings. The fruits of Klug's return are now ready to be enjoyed. Yes a couple of additions with a bit of experience would be welcome but if it doesn't happen, and Lambert gets this to click, it could be amazing. I'm excited to see how this unfolds.

Obviously he is away off full match fitness but hopefully he can have a relatively injury free season as he can play a major part for us in the coming season.

I misread the title to start with.
I originally thought it said Huws: Only Start. Which will probably be the case.

He is a fantastic player who has had rotten luck with injuries. Fit and on form he could be a major factor in us winning promotion.

A fully fit Emyr Huws would be an outstanding player in league one.
Here's hoping he comes good!

Huws fit even for 20 games would be a boost can't stop thinking about the game when we beat Newcastle at home when he was class scoring a quality goal i think the team looks very light weight and we shouldn't rely on the young players in which is going to be a very physical season the main priority being a big physical striker and midfield ball winner.

Second has always been first loser in my book. Genuinely aim high and then higher individually and as a team and you have a decent chance of progress and success. If it doesn't go to plan you take stock and change plan

I'm going to stick my neck out and say this will be Huws' year and he'll be a contender for player of the season.

I think there's more chance of my late dad's Morris Minor 1960 Traveller continuing through 2019 without assistance than Emyr doing so. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

I see a lot of comments about his fitness. If Mings can come back from his injury and then be sold for 20 million, then Huws can come back too.

Potentially the best player we have, even over Judge and Norwood.

Hollywoodginge, so right and good to hear some positivity based on fact rather than so much negativity based on conjecture. Everyone seemed so up beat about our up and coming lads, then along came relegation and they're no longer good enough? I for one am positive about our future. Huws will be massive for us. Any news on Will Keane? Would love to see him back.
