Ex-Leeds man hails quality of potential new signing from Brentford

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has hailed the quality of potential new signing Romaine Sawyers from Brentford as reported by the Football Insider.

Whelan has claimed that Sawyers is ‘what Marco Bielsa is looking for’. “Yes, he is Leeds quality, I’ve really liked him for a number of seasons. He is big and strong, very calm on the ball with a wide range of passing and, crucially, he is physical as well. He ticks a lot of boxes.

“He has developed at a good footballing club, which is what Marcelo Bielsa wants, and will have learned a lot from Dean Smith.

“I’d like Sawyers at Leeds, and I’d be very happy if we got him, but to play alongside Kalvin Phillips and not as a replacement for him.”

There are also other clubs chasing the signature of the Brentford midfielder with Scottish champions Celtic also having made a bid of around £2million for him although this was rejected by the Bees.

Sawyers came through the West Bromwich Albion academy and they are another club who are monitoring his situation. Middlesbrough and Stoke City have also registered interest with Sawyers not being short of attention this transfer window.

Brentford signed Sawyers from Walsall back in 2016 and the midfielder is now entering the final year of his contract. It would certainly make sense for the London club to sell him in this window or risk losing him on a free transfer next summer should he decide to move elsewhere.

The midfielder would however be a huge loss to Brentford as he was a regular in their side last season making 42 appearances for them.
