Blues Linked With Sunderland Trio
Thursday, 27th May 2021 12:54

Town are reported to be showing interest in Sunderland trio Charlie Wyke, Max Power and young attacker Josh Hawkes.

According to the EADT, the Blues are keen on striker Wyke and midfielders Power and Hawkes as manager Paul Cook looks to make very significant changes to his squad this summer.

Wyke netted 31 times for the Black Cats last season and was League One’s second-top scorer having been linked with Town last summer.

The 28-year-old, who joined the Wearsiders from Bradford for £250,000 in the summer of 2018, is out of contract at the Stadium of Light but has been offered new terms.

Championship sides Nottingham Forest, Millwall, Cardiff City and former club Middlesbrough have all recently been linked, along with Celtic and CSKA Moscow.

Born in Middlesbrough, Wyke started his career with his hometown club during which time he had spells on loan at Kettering, Hartlepool and AFC Wimbledon before moving to Carlisle on a permanent basis and then the Bantams.

Power has been released by the Black Cats this summer having skippered them in 2020/21.

The 27-year-old previously played for Town boss Paul Cook at Wigan and was part of the Latics side which won the League One title in 2017/18.

Birkenhead-born Power came through the ranks at Tranmere before moving on to Wigan in 2015 and then Sunderland, initially on loan, three years later.

Hawkes, 22, started his career with Hartlepool and spent time on loan at Marske United and Dunston UTS while with Pools.

He joined Sunderland in 2020 on a two-year deal but has made only one senior appearance in the EFL Trophy.

An attacking player who can operate centrally or in wide areas, Hawkes netted 13 league goals in 19 starts for the Wearsiders’ U23s during 2020/21.

Given his lack of first-team chances, it’s understood the Stockton-on-Tees schemer would be interested in a move.

Looks good to me.But let's all wait till June 9th when the window opens.I won't start getting excited till then.

I'd be well happy with Charlie Wyke, 2nd top goal scorer in the league what's not to like. Don't know a great deal about Max Power but sounds pretty decent. The young lad though I'm not so sure, only played in the under 23's, we've got plenty of our own with that level of experience. We need proven quality if we're really serious about going for promotion.

Sounds good
Charlie Wyke would surely be able to earn more in the Championship so that seems unlikely.

Agree with MickMillsTash. Highly unlikely re Wyke. But the other two sound plausible. Wonder if the yanks are still set on a big name older player for the razzmatazz?

They didn't get Sunderland promotion

Sunderland have a new owner who is not short of cash - way beyond what we can hope for, so it won't be any need for money or wages any of them leave for.

Nicking Sunderland's top scorer would be a major coup - which makes all this very unlikely.

Very amusing to read back some of the comments on the previous link with Charlie Wyke from last summer. And then he goes and scores 30+ goals for Sunderland.

Out of the seven clubs mentioned I imagine we'll be his seventh preferred destination. Always regarded as a cart horse, he is now beyond what we're likely to attract. Even with the monumental injection of cash,i fear we'll only be able to pick up the scraps.

The fact that Wyke's contract has run down suggests that he is keen on a move. However, he is likely to see Ipswich as a sideways move at best so this seems unlikely. The Power link seems more plausible, especially with his PC connection.

@itfcserbia Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Have a look at the comments from when we were linked with a £1m move for Jamie Vardy!

Would be really happy to get Charlie Wyke but think it is unlikely to happen

How many times have we been linked to Homer Simpson?

Wyke is just never going to happen no matter who owns us. It's laughable just reading this garbage. We are what we are ....a failing club. What decent player would see us as a step up. Everyone needs to get realistic on the type of players we will sign.

More links, more unsubstantiated claims, more column inches filled when nothing's happening. Sospier (first comment) is spot on, June 9th is when it gets interesting, until then, or when players' deals actually expire, (usually June 30th) its all conjecture.
The one that caught my eye today on released players though is Wiltshire, probably on way too much money for us but thats the sort of player to get us promoted all the way....

We must really stop doing this to ourselves, it's infuriating 😖..
Let's get back to the nothing to see here attitude, until we see new players holding up the shirt of destiny 😁.. Jokes aside, it's all total pony until that time..
It's become habitual reading false dawns on the EADT and TWTD websites..
I'm going back to the, if it makes local TV news, then it's a done deal..
I can't put myself through this anymore 😖..

Max Power, he's the man whose name you'd love to touch
But you mustn't touch.
his name sounds good in your ear
But when you say it, you mustn't fear
'Cause his name can be said by anyone.

Harry10. What are you on about? Think you'll find our new ownership has at least as much, if not more money than the new Sunderland owner to call on. And they will be in exactly the same position as us regarding wages anyway.

Wyke will surely go to the Championship. The other two have clearly been around the lower leagues but Cook knows them. Are they likely to take us to the next level ? The couldn't do it at Sunderland. Looking forward to seeing what sort of squad he manages to assemble. Can't get too excited with what I've heard but it's still early days. Much work to be done in so little time.

We need a “signature signing” from the off for the obvious reasons, but also to send a message out how serious and competitive we intend to be.

SickParrot added 16:17 - May 27
Wyke would be a great signing but if he does leave Sunderland it will be to a championship club or Celtic. As Power has played for PC before we might have a chance with him but why are Sunderland letting their captain go?

I love the transfer gossip! Surprised it annoys so many people, it's great fun. All part and parcel. Surely we're all wise enough to know that even a marque signing doesn't guarantee much, so enjoy the ride right - it's what football is all about.

Would love to get Wyke after the season he's had, he'll be full of confidence. I suspect he'll want the move up the pyramid but you never know...

Good luck Towern, let's nab some beauts!

Blues1. Sunderland will not be in the same position as us with wages as their income
Will be significantly higher. Even if we were flying we wouldn't be getting 20,000 crowds.
