Ipswich Town: Omari Hutchinson and Jaden Philogene score as England U21s beat Portugal 4-2
An Ipswich Town duo both found the net as England Under-21s overcame Portugal in a six-goal thriller.
Omari Hutchinson and Jaden Philogene both scored in the second-half as the Young Lions won the friendly 4-2 at the Hawthorns.
Hutchinson, who was winning his fourth U21s cap, started as the central striker for Lee Carsley’s side, after his red card in Friday’s match in France.
Philogene and Town striker Liam Delap were on the bench and were both introduced in the 70th minute.
Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney fired England in front before Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, who turned 18 on Friday, curled the ball home on his full debut.
With the score at 2-1, Hutchinson nodded in from close range to extend England's lead, before Portugal hit back again.
Philogene sealed the win for the Young Lions in stoppage time with a low finish following a counter-attack.
It was the 22-year-old’s fourth goal for the England U21s.
Blues striker George Hirst came on as a substitute for Scotland in both games of the Nations League play-offs following his switch of allegiance from England.
The Scots won the first leg in Piraeus 1-0 but were defeated 3-0 at Hampden Park in the second on Sunday to drop into Nations League B.
Ipswich’s Cieran Slicker did not make an appearance in either game for Steve Clarke’s side.
Centre-half Cameron Burgess as well as forwards Nathan Broadhead and Julio Enciso are among other Town players who could win international caps today.
